Poland Bombe

Eventually, the sheer weight of communiqués sent using Enigma became so large that the Polish code breakers could no longer cope manually deciphering the messages.
They went back to Wytwornia Radiotechniczna AVA and asked them to build a machine for electromechanically testing through ranges of possible rotor settings automatically.
Using the bombes it was possible to decode an enigma message in a couple of hours.
These are mock ups of a British bombe machine used at Bletchley Park (They were made for the film). The front has the rotors on and the back has wires.
These are an evolution of the polish machines.
The polish bombes became mostly obsolete when the Germans further complicated things by allowing the operators to select a number of rotor from a greater pool and therefore mixing things up a bit further.
Then comes one of the greatest displays of national heroism of the second world war. In 1939 with Nazi Germany at the borders Poland. In July of 1939 meeting occurred in Warsaw between representatives from Poland, France and Britain. Poland handed over everything they had about the enigma machine, including the ones they had built and bombe machines and code books.
Part of this deal may have been an undertaking by French and British forces to help Poland fight the Nazi invasion. Poland was invaded without resistance on 1st November 1939.
